Your Guide to Looking Perfect in Your Next ID Photo

Getting your ID picture taken can be a bit of a hassle. And sometimes all that hassle might be for a picture that does not look as flattering as you would like it to be. Wouldn’t it be great if you could finally get that ID picture that you are proud to show off?

In today’s modern society with the ever-growing need for identification, you are probably going to need a picture ID at some point, if not multiple. To get the most professional looking ID picture possible, consider the following DO’s and DON’Ts and give them a try!

DO

  1. Flash those whites!
Because of the straight-on angle, there is a thin line between a mug shot and an ID picture. Therefore, you want to make sure you look friendly and approachable. This means show your beautiful smile.

  2. It’s all about the eyes!
It is important you are facing the camera and to keep your eyes wide open. You can leave the dramatic gazes in the distance at home. Not only does this look better on your ID, but this is also an official ID, and it is important that you can clearly be identified if needed.

  3. Consider the weather
Regardless of the weather, you are going to be taking your photo. So, make sure if it is a windy, rainy, or humid day to take a glimpse in the mirror. This can overcome unexpected hair looks or washed-out mascara on your ID picture.

  4. Posture says it all
Sit up straight to make sure you are represented properly and professional in your brand-new ID. To quickly achieve a more confident posture for your ID photo, take a big breath to relax your body. Another simple thing you can do is to raise your chin slightly. This can help you get the most out of minimal lighting.

DON’T

  1. Shiny face crème’s
If you want to avoid looking oily or shiny, it's best to stay away from products with a lot of shimmer or reflective properties. This includes things like thick moisturizers, heavy makeup, and even certain sunscreens.

  2. Sleeveless clothes
If you are looking for a summery style that will still look appropriate in your ID photo, avoid sleeveless tops and dresses. Your shoulders most likely will be visible in the photo, so if you do choose to wear something sleeveless, make sure the straps are wide enough to avoid looking shirtless or bring a jacket or blazer with you.

  3. Heavy Make-Up
While you might feel tempted to put on a heavy make-up look, it is recommended to keep your look natural and as close to your day-to-day look as possible. After all, this is a form of identification, and you want to make sure you can easily be identified on any day if needed.

Extra tip if you wear glasses:

Wearing glasses on your ID picture can often get you a glare across them. For those who wear prescription glasses, tilt your head slightly downward when taking the photo. It will reduce glare from the flash of the camera from hitting your lenses straight on!
